Health & Safety Announcements
TB Exposure
Two members
of the SDSU Community have
recently been diagnosed with infectious tuberculosis (TB).
It is suspected that one
individual may have contagious between 1/22/08 and
5/7/08 and the second may
have been contagious between 2/1/08 and 5/25/08. Student Health Services is working with the County of San Diego Health & Human Services Agency’s Tuberculosis Control Program to notify and test the students who have had repeated and prolonged exposure to this individual. It is these people who have the highest chance of becoming infected from their exposure. If you have been contacted by a member of the Tuberculosis Control Program, you should be tested promptly to see if you have been infected. Student Health Services offers free TB skin testing for students on a walk-in basis, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30 AM-12:30 PM and 1:30-4:30 PM. You must first check in for the skin test at the Information Window on the ground floor of Calpulli Center. Students must return in 2-3 days for a reading of the test. Students may also obtain free TB testing at a San Diego County Public Health Center; call 619-692-5565 for details. If you decide to be tested through your personal physician, please have him or her fax a copy of the results to Takisha Williams at San Diego County Tuberculosis Control at 619-692-5650. Because it may take up to 10 weeks before a skin test becomes positive, individuals with a negative skin test reading will need to repeat the skin test on or after 7/2/08. Exposed SDSU employees may be tested by their personal physician or at a County Public Health Center.
Further information on the County TB Control program is available at http://www2.sdcounty.ca.gov/hhsa/ServiceCategoryDetails.asp?ServiceAreaID=43.
