Emergency Contraceptives (ECPs)

Where to go and what to do.

Quick facts on emergency contraceptives.

ECPs are a safe and effective way to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex.

Consider using ECPs if:

  • You didn't use contraceptives during sex
  • Your contraceptive method failed (i.e. condom broke)

When should you take ECPs?

  • ECPs should be taken within 72 hours (three days) after unprotected sex. ECPs are more effective the sooner they are taken.
  • 2 doses are required

Where can you get ECPs?

ECPs are available at selected pharmacies without a prescription. However, you will still need to speak with the pharmacist to discuss the medication and to receive a fact sheet regarding the ECPs.
