Health Promotion

OUR MISSION IS TO:

Create a campus environment in which students can feel empowered to make healthy choices, to help students develop healthy personal and social identifications and to assist students in challenging barriers to healthy behaviors, such as negative social pressures and unrealistic expectations.

We offer individual health counseling by appointment. Call 619-594-4133 to schedule a time to meet with our staff.

Women's Health Seminars (GYN Orientations)

Our GYN Orientations are designed to inform SDSU women on how to take control of their sexual health. They are comprehensive sessions that cover topics such as Pap smears, birth control methods, STDs, breast self-exam (BSE) and other women's health topics. There is also a session developed specifically for lesbian women (LGYN) and their particular health issues. This special session will answer the following questions:

"Why would I benefit from a hormonal birth control method?"

"If I don't have sex with men, should I be concerned about STDs or having a pap smear?"

"Why would I use a condom?"

If you are a lesbian student who needs to attend a GYN session, we would encourage you to come to a LGYN session. Please call 619-594-4133 to schedule a session with us.

Sessions last approximatley 75 minutes and are required for women who have never had a Pap smear and/or wanting to start on a birth control method for the first time. No appointments are needed, just show up at our scheduled times and bring a friend!

Our department offers a full range of counseling and therapy for just about any nutritional need you may require. A registered dietician is available for acute issues such as: eating disorders, obesity, diabetes management and other serious nutritional needs (available by referral only). The Wellness Center at the ARC provides general nutrition counseling, offered by highly trained interns from the Nutrition & Exercise Department. The interns can help in areas such as weight loss and management, weight gain, vegetarian diets and other general nutrition needs. All services are free of charge, so call us today to schedule your appointment: 619-594-4133

Smoking Cessation

The Health Promotion Department offers tobacco cessation counseling for smoking and chewing tobacco. Counseling consists of individual sessions with a trained Peer Health Educator and emphasizes on behavior modification techniques for quitting. Pharmacological treatment options are also available for those who desire them, but students should first meet with a counselor for an initial screening session. Each session lasts thirty minutes.

Peer Health Education...Changing the way SDSU thinks!

SDSU students can actively promote wellness on campus by becoming Peer Health Educators (PHEs). PHEs present dynamic workshops to their SDSU peers that focus on various health topics and issues that affect the lives of students. In order to be a Peer Health Educator you must successfully complete the Peer Health Education Training class. Students have the option of receiving course credit for participating in the PHE Program Training and for active participation in the PHE Program thereafter.

PHE Tracks:

  • Alcohol and Other Drugs: Learn about the different types of each; how they affect your body, who's most likely to abuse them, who's at greatest risk for dependency, consequences of use, and how you can reduce the risk of negative consequences.
  • Body Image/Disordered Eating: Increase awareness and provide information about body image and disordered eating issues. Encourage students to move toward a positive body image.
  • Nutrition and Physical Activity: Learn about basic nutrition and fitness, and how to incorporate healthy eating into a busy college lifesytle. From protein and carbohydrates to the latest fad diets, you will gain knowledge of the proper way to fuel your body.
  • Sexual Health: A comprehensive course on safe sex practices, communication and sexuality, making healthier decisions regarding sex, sexually transmitted diseases, and contraceptive methods.
  • Frat MANers (Fraternity Men Against Negative Environments and Rape Situations): The goal of the program is to increase awareness about rape, potential rape situations and sexually coercive behavior while decreasing the acceptance of rape myths. Members of Frat MANers educate men about rape and their role in reducing violence against women. (Download Frat MANers application)

Qualifications for Involvement:

  • SDSU registered student, either full or part-time.
  • You must be completing 60 units during your first semester as a PHE.
  • Ability to committ a minimum of 2-consecutive semesters to the PHE Program before graduating (one semester for training and at least one for active participation in the program).
  • Completion of a successful PHE interview.
  • Passing grade in the PHE Program Training.

Active PHE Responsibilities:

  • Attend and participate in scheduled meetings.
  • Meet minimum participation requirements for each semester.
  • Represent the PHE Program and SDSU Student Health Services Health Promotion Department appropriately anytime you are serving as a PHE.
