Peer Health Education

SDSU students may actively promote wellness on campus by becoming Peer Health Educators (PHEs). PHEs present dynamic workshops to their SDSU peers that focus on various health issues that affect the lives of students. In order to be a PHE you must successfully complete the PHE training class. Students receive course credit for participating in the PHE program.

PHE Tracks:

  • Alcohol and Other Drugs: Learn about the different types of each; how they affect your body, who's most likely to abuse them, who's at greatest risk for dependency, consequences of use, and how you can reduce the risk of negative consequences.
  • Body Image/Disordered Eating: Increase awareness and provide information about body image and disordered eating issues. Encourage students to move toward a positive body image.
  • Frat MANers (Fraternity Men Against Negative Environments and Rape Situations): Increase awareness about rape, potential rape situations and sexually coercive behavior while decreasing the acceptance of rape myths. Members of Frat MANers educate men about rape and their role in reducing violence against women.
  • Nutrition and Physical Activity: Learn about basic nutrition and fitness, and how to incorporate healthy eating into a busy college lifesytle. From protein and carbohydrates to the latest fad diets, you will gain knowledge of the proper way to fuel your body.
  • Sexual Health: A comprehensive course on safe sex practices, communication and sexuality, making healthier decisions regarding sex, sexually transmitted diseases, and contraceptive methods.

Qualifications for Involvement:

  • SDSU registered student, either full or part-time.
  • You must have completed 60 units or working towards 60 units during your first semester as a PHE.
  • Ability to commit a minimum of 2-consecutive semesters to the PHE Program before graduating (one semester for training and at least one for active participation in the program).
  • Completion of a successful PHE interview.
  • Passing grade in the PHE Program Training.

If you would like to apply for the PHE program you may download the PHE application (or for FratMANers) and submit it to the Health Promotion office at Student Health Services, you can pick one up in person, or call (619) 594-4133 for more details.
