Basic Medical Care
Student Health Services (SHS) is staffed by fully licensed and
certified health professionals who are dedicated to the college
community. Our basic services include outpatient evaluation and
treatment of common medical problems, preventive care, health
counseling, and psychiatric treatment. You may receive general care
by making an advanced or same-day appointment. Most basic services
are provided under the health fee paid at the time of registration
for regular matriculated SDSU students. Extended Studies students
are required to pay a one-time fee at time of first visit that will
cover basic services for one semester.
Urgent Care
The medical staff of the Urgent Care area can treat most acute
illnesses and injuries such as breathing problems, lacerations,
burns, fractures, sprains and abrasions. Services are offered on a
first-come, first-served basis with those who are more acutely ill
or injured taking priority. As a result, wait times can vary from
1-3 hours. Our staff recommends same-day or advanced appointments
to students who present with less urgent needs.
Radiology
The radiology suite offers state-of-the-art imaging services with
digital equipment that enables our healthcare providers to view
images instantly. Copies of images are available to patients for a
small fee. For specialized imaging such as MRI, CAT scans and
ultrasound, SHS partners with Imaging Health Care Specialists to
offer discounted student rates; Imaging Health Care Specialists
accepts most private insurances.
Laboratory Services
Student Health Services boasts a modern and spacious laboratory
with services such as blood counts, urinalyses, throat cultures,
and pregnancy testing. Most lab tests are performed on site,
however those needing further analysis or specialty testing are
sent to a partnering lab (additional costs may apply for outside
laboratory services). Lab orders from outside healthcare providers
are not accepted without a Student Health Services health care
provider evaluation; our health care providers can direct you to a
local “draw” station that may accept your insurance.
Injections
Tuberculosis (TB) tests and tetanus immunization after injuries are
the only injections included under basic services. Elective
immunizations such as for meningococcal vaccine or travel are not
included as basic services (see
Fee Schedule
or visit the
Immunization
page for more details).
Pharmacy
Our pharmacy features a large over-the-counter retail space that
includes a range of discounted products such as cough and cold
remedies, first aid, skin care, feminine hygiene, and other helpful
items that you would expect from your local pharmacy. We can fill
most prescriptions from our SHS providers as well as outside
provider (some limitations apply as to what insurance plans we can
accept). If we don't carry what you need the pharmacist may be
able to obtain it by special order.
Other Services Covered Under Basic Care
Physical therapy is available for injuries by referral only. Minor
surgery (i.e. cyst and mole removal) can be performed in one of
our procedure rooms by appointment (lab fees may apply).
